How to Make Money From Direct Targeted Email Marketing

Email is a powerful thing and if you know what you’re doing direct targeted email marketing can make you a lot of money. But take a look at your spam folder. Notice anything different?

If it’s anything like mine, you’ll have noticed a marked drop in the number of tempting offers for those little blue ‘enhancement’ pills… fake diplomas… lottery scams and yes, even the beloved Nigerian scam.

Have the spammers decided to call it a day?

Alas, no.

Why legitimate businesses can learn from spammers and make money from direct targeted email marketing

The closure of McColo – a web hosting firm that is believed to have had spam gangs as clients – has led to a 70% reduction in junk mail. According to the BBC, “it is believed that it hosted gangs running botnets – networks of computers that have been taken over by criminals to send malicious software and spam.”

Enjoy it while it lasts… because they will be back! Analysts expect spam will return to previous levels by the end of November as the spammers find a new host.

But I really don’t know why they bother. Another report out this week revealed that spammers were getting a response rate of less than 0.00001%! In other words, they would have to send out 12.5 million emails for every sale!

Is it really worth it? Well, yes.

The recent study saw scientists act as spammers themselves by hijacking an existing spam network. While running their undercover spam campaigns the researchers sent 469 million junk e-mail messages. The vast majority of these were for a fake pharmacy which mimicked the spammer’s version. However it always returned an error message when potential buyers clicked a button to submit their credit card details.

“After 26 days, and almost 350 million e-mail messages, only 28 sales resulted,” wrote the researchers. “Taken together, these conversions would have resulted in revenues of $2,731.88-a bit over $100 a day for the measurement period,” they added.

$100 a day! Hardly worth risking jail for is it? But hold on, this was just a small test. The researchers estimate that the controllers of the entire system they had hijacked are netting about $7,000 (4,430) a day or more than $2m (1.28m) per year.

Now it’s looking a bit more attractive, but really not that much compared to people who are using email marketing ethically and legally.

So why don’t they just come clean? Perhaps there should be an amnesty for spammers? We should allow them to leave the dark side and move into legitimate business and share their experience and skills.

Spammers have a lot going for them…

They are technically advanced and smart enough to keep ahead of the authorities, ISPs and spam filters. They can think creatively – I mean some of those subject lines are irresistible!

Just think what they could bring to a legitimate information publishing business? They could easily make $2 million per year…

- They wouldn’t need to send out millions of unsolicited emails as their response rates to a opt-in list could be anywhere from 2% – 30%. In fact they could make good money from a list as small as 1,000. Remember my email last week when I told you how Jon Street had made over 30,000 in one weekend with just 670 names! I don’t normally blow my email trumpet, but earlier this year I brought in 1,510,000 in 2 weeks from a list of around 15,000.

- They wouldn’t have to grub around with dodgy scams, pills or diplomas – they could actually help people to solve their problems. And if they promoted good quality products they would inevitably have plenty of glowing testimonials from people who have benefited.

And who knows, the spammers could really redeem themselves by using their expertise to change history! Seriously, email has the power to change entire nations, economies and even stop wars…

I’m getting a bit evangelical now…but I truly believe that email cannot only provide anyone with a money-making opportunity, but it can actually change the course of history!

Consider US President elect, Barack Obama. The success of his election campaign can partly be attributed to the use of email marketing!

On the night of his election win, he sent out 70 million emails to people who had signed up on his website thanking them for making history! Far more significantly is the amount of money the Obama campaign was able to generate in contributions. In September he raised $112 million online!

According to a recent Sunday Times article; “The web spearheaded a new way of fundraising, identifying volunteers and – most of all – accumulating contact details for millions of converts to the Obama surge.”

He was able to bypass traditional media and go straight to people’s inboxes with personal messages.

Obama’s website also moves beyond just email marketing to use social networking (it’s no accident that one of Facebook’s founders joined the Obama campaign early on).

Ok, so I’m not suggesting you run for political office, but you can see how powerful the legitimate use of emails can be!

Developing a Give2Get Marketing Plan

First, let’s take a look at why you need a marketing plan to grow your practice.

If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail, or at the very least fail to accomplish your desired outcome. I’m positive you have heard this expression before. Most Chiropreneurs would rather sidestep the planning phase and just jump right in and start spending their hard-earned money. Bad move. Very bad move!

Marketing your brand of chiropractic is not something you should be doing in a haphazard, inconsistent manner.

Often I’ll ask a Chiropreneur what they want to achieve with their marketing. Often the response: “I really don’t know,” or “Increase my new patient production.”

Imagine if they were getting ready to go on a vacation but hadn’t stopped to decide “where” they were going. How would they know what to pack? How would they know what kind of transportation would be needed? How would they know how to start? How would they know what direction to go in, or if they were making any progress? They wouldn’t!

In fact, most Chiropreneurs spend more time “planning” their vacations than they do planning their business!

Or, suppose you were a farmer who didn’t know what kind of crop you wanted. How would you know what seeds to plant? What kind of fertilizer to use? You get the idea.

You must FIRST decide exactly what you want to achieve, and then you need to develop an effective plan for achieving it.

It’s no different with your marketing. You must know where you want to go, if you want your marketing to help get you there. It’s so much easier to get someplace once you know where that someplace is and you have a “map” to guide you and keep you on track.

Once you have decided on your destination ( $1,000,000 in collections, 40 New Patients per Month Average, PVA of 40, and Average Visit Income of $50.00, etc.) then you just have to make a plan of how to reach that destination.

If you know where you are going, what the target is, and you have a plan to support your vision, you’ve given yourself an excellent chance for success.

A Marketing Plan is Not a Picture…

It’s a Puzzle

Many Chiropreneurs have an enormous misconception about marketing plans. They’ll say something like, “Can you help me create a marketing plan? I need it by the end of this month.”

They honestly believe that a marketing plan is something that they can put together and then merely follow it and success will be there. It doesn’t work that way.

A marketing plan is not a permanent picture that is created in one sitting. It’s a living, evolving “puzzle” made from matching pieces that are only discovered through “trial and results” over time.

Sure, someone with experience can lead you in the right direction, and make recommendations of things for you to test. But they can’t predict exactly how your particular plan will evolve. Or the results you can expect to receive.

To develop your plan to generate Prospex from your List of Strangers, you have an unlimited number of marketing tactics available to you. You could base your plan on the least expensive tactics by giving talks to Prospex groups, writing articles for your local publications or columns, submitting Media Releases or giving interviews on local or national media.

Or you may elect to focus on building a referral network, or marketing alliances with other like-minded entrepreneurs in your marketplace. Another Chiropreneur may not want to use those tactics and may elect to test low-cost media ads, free-standing inserts, and small mailings directed to his/her target group.

Each Chiropreneur selects the marketing strategies and tactics he or she feels most comfortable with in relation to his/her time, energy, budget and personality. No one else can predict or tell you which is right for you.

One Chiropreneur may have a vision of building his business to a $1,000,000, while another wouldn’t dream of growing beyond $500,000. Each calls for a different marketing plan.

Whichever tactics any of these Chiropreneurs choose, they will be “testing” them to determine if they are appropriate and effective for reaching their particular Prospex. They must then test their Prospex Generating Offers with those tactics until they find a match.

When you know that you have the right strategy and tactics, then it is just a matter of testing your offers to those Prospex. If you test one and it doesn’t work, you try another, and another until you get the results you want.

That’s how puzzles and successful marketing plans evolve. As you grow and as your marketplace changes, your plan must change. You will be continually looking for new opportunities and you’ll have to test your marketing tactics to find the right ones to achieve the highest levels of success.

Affiliate Marketing – New Horizons

When you set up your own business with mortar and bricks, you have a product to sell. With affiliate marketing, you set up a business without the bricks and without a product, because you are selling someone else’s product. A number of people in affiliate marketing make a good living by marketing big chains like Sony, Amazon, and Best Buy etc. and other sites. There is a vast range of these markets, and you can select one according to your interest and make good money with affiliate marketing. Although it requires lots of skills, and the most important skill for affiliate marketing is the skill to draw traffic to your pages.

Once you begin to direct traffic to your web page, it gets into ‘sales funnel.’ When a client goes in the funnel, your work is done, and the merchant’s job begins. There are many ways to direct traffic towards your web pages, for example Blogs, Twitter, My Space, Facebook etc. You should also increase your knowledge base. Knowledge will always help you.

Affiliate marketing brings gains to you, and also to the merchant.

Broad Market Spectrum: They get a wide market to advertise their products. More sites mean more sales, resulting in more profits.
Low First Investment: The basic investment is hard work and time. You can spend money on buying a domain name, or create a free site using WordPress.
No Inventory: You do not need to keep inventory, or store any products in affiliate marketing. The manufacturer handles all these things. You just need to direct traffic to the merchant’s site.
No prior experience needed: You do not need to have any previous experience in the area of sales, to step into the world of affiliate marketing. Though, hard work and persistence are definitely required.
Passive Income: You can earn passive income even when you are away, or sleeping. Once you have laid the stage, you can sit back and relax.
Small Risk and Big Income: There is minimum risk involved because the investment is low and income is high. The major investments are your time and work.
Affiliate marketing is an interesting way to earn good income, working from home. It does require hard work in the beginning, but after everything is set up, you just need to relax as money rolls in. It is by far, the best way to earn money on the Internet.
